Low Loader vs Flatbed Trailer
Which trailer type is right for your cargo? A complete comparison of step-frame low loaders and standard flatbed trailers — deck height, capacity, costs, and when to use each one.
What Is a Low Loader?
A low loader (also called a step-frame, low-bed, or drop-deck trailer) is a specialised semi-trailer with a lowered cargo deck sitting between 400 and 600 mm above ground level. The "step" or "goose-neck" section drops behind the tractor coupling to create the low platform.
Low loaders are specifically engineered for heavy and oversized machinery. The low deck height allows tall equipment like excavators (boom height 3.2–3.5 m) to travel within the standard 4.0 m overall height limit. Hydraulic ramps enable tracked and wheeled machines to drive on under their own power — no crane required.
What Is a Flatbed Trailer?
A flatbed trailer (platform trailer) is a standard semi-trailer with a flat, open cargo deck at 1,300–1,500 mm above ground level. The deck sits directly above the axles with no lowered section, offering a simple, versatile loading platform for crane or forklift operations.
Flatbeds are the workhorses of general haulage. Their higher deck and simpler construction make them cheaper, more widely available, and suitable for steel structures, containers, precast elements, and packaged machinery. Maximum cargo height is limited to approximately 2.6 m to stay within the 4.0 m overall height envelope.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Low Loader | Flatbed |
|---|---|---|
| Deck height | 400–600 mm | 1,300–1,500 mm |
| Max payload | 20–60 tonnes | 24–27 tonnes |
| Max cargo height | ~3.5 m (under 4.0 m total) | ~2.6 m (under 4.0 m total) |
| Loading method | Ramp / drive-on / crane | Crane / forklift only |
| Typical cargo | Excavators, dozers, mobile cranes | Steel, containers, precast concrete |
| Permits needed | Often (oversized / overweight) | Rarely (standard dimensions) |
| Cost (200 km, 25 t) | €800–€1,200 | €500–€750 |
When to Use Each Trailer
Choose a Low Loader
- Tracked machines (excavators, dozers, pavers)
- Tall equipment exceeding 2.6 m height
- Heavy loads over 27 tonnes
- Self-propelled loading required (no crane on site)
- Mobile cranes, drilling rigs, generators
Choose a Flatbed
- Containerised cargo or ISO containers
- Steel structures, beams, profiles
- Precast concrete elements (<2.6 m tall)
- Machines under 27 t with crane available on site
- Budget-sensitive transport of standard-size cargo
Key Advantages
Low Loader Advantages
- Self-propelled loading via hydraulic ramp — no crane needed
- Low centre of gravity — safer for tall & heavy machines
- Supports up to 60 tonnes on multi-axle configurations
- Maximises legal height clearance for tall equipment
- Ideal for tracked vehicles (excavators, dozers, pavers)
Flatbed Advantages
- Lower transport cost for standard-weight cargo
- Wide availability — faster booking & more carriers
- No ramp needed — quicker turnaround with crane loading
- Standard dimensions — no oversized permits in most cases
- Versatile for palletised goods, steel, and containers
Cost Comparison — Real Scenarios
| Scenario | Low Loader | Flatbed |
|---|---|---|
| Excavator 22 t, 200 km | €900–€1,100 | Not suitable (self-propelled) |
| Steel beams 18 t, 300 km | €1,100–€1,400 | €700–€900 |
| Transformer 45 t, 500 km | €2,800–€3,600 | Not possible (overweight) |
| Precast panels 24 t, 150 km | €750–€950 | €450–€600 |
| Wheel loader 28 t, 400 km | €1,400–€1,800 | Not suitable (>27 t) |
